Interview with María Rosalba Gómez Vasquez, Colombia

Name, country, function and union in your country of origin?

María Rosalba Gómez Vasquez, Colombia

CUT (Unitary Central of Workers), CUT Executive, International Relations

How long have you been an ILO delegate? What brought you to the ILO?

I have come to 4 ILO Conferences including the one we are currently in.

I have been interested in women's rights, and conventions 189 and 190.

What is your opinion on the evolution of the degree of union organization over time? Progress and obstacles: Any country that stands out?

We have made progress in the Collective Bargaining, in the effort to ratify ILO Convention 190 “No to Workplace and sexual harassment”.

We have a new government of change with president Gustavo Petro and vice president Francia Márquez. There are reform projects on labor, pension, health and education reform projects.

The Ministry of Women achieved the inclusion of the issue of care economy in the development plan, among others.

Obstacles: that some of the government's opponents work against the changes.

Looking ahead, what do you see? What is the biggest challenge/best path forward?

Biggest challenge is the ratification of ILO Convention 190 and advancing women's rights.

Also advancing workers' rights.

Way forward: always in defense of the rights of workers and peace in Colombia.

What do you think of the “Nordic model”, where employers and unions set wages and conditions through negotiations, rather than legislation?

The Nordic model has many advances in social dialogue, in education and in women's rights, so it is very important.

Social dialogue in the negotiation of the minimum wage, of course in Colombia a lot of political will is still needed from the companies.
